Window of Opportunity

I had sort of an “Indiana Jones” moment not long ago. You remember Indiana Jones—the movie hero whose adventures take him around the world in search of archaeological treasure and into conflict with murderous thugs and villains.

Well, maybe my “moment” wasn’t quite that exciting. But I did feel like I discovered a hidden treasure right here at Pilgrim.

I’ve always loved the art glass windows in our church building. The story of Jesus’ life runs through the smaller windows on the side. Other windows depict different stories or biblical truths. I puzzled over the “gallery” window—the large window that dominates the balcony. According to an inscription on the glass itself, it was produced by Peter Dohmen studios of St. Paul . A little digging in some church records revealed that it was installed in “about 1962.”

But I didn’t puzzle so much over the history of the window as its theme. The Bible passage at the bottom of the window is Luke 24:31: “Then their eyes were opened and they knew him.” The verse comes from the story of the disciples on the way to Emmaus. Jesus walked with these two men on Easter evening, but they didn’t recognize him as he explained the Scriptures. When the group stopped for the night they realized it was Jesus when he broke bread. Jesus then disappeared and the disciples hurried back to Jerusalem to tell the others. (If you’d like to review the story for yourself, it’s in Luke 24:13-35) The window depicts the moment when Jesus broke bread and the disciples recognized him.

I know the story, but I was still puzzled. The Bible verse on the window is written backwards. Therefore, it was meant to be read from outside the building. That feature of the window has been frustrated by a protective Plexiglas covering that has clouded with age.

So . . . why was I puzzled? I wondered first of all why this story had been chosen as the theme for the largest window in the building. Usually the large window in a church building is the “Good Shepherd” window or it will depict Christ’s ascension. I’ve seen other stories in large windows like this one, but Pilgrim is the only place where I’ve seen this story as the largest one. Next question: why was it designed to be read from the outside rather than the inside?

Then it hit me . . . That’s the Pilgrim Window. The disciples were pilgrims, people on a spiritual journey. The sad news of Jesus’ death discouraged them. Jesus walked with them in their time of sorrow and confusion. He walked with them even when they didn’t recognize him.

That window is there to testify to the truth that at whatever stage in your pilgrimage you find yourself, whatever burden or sorrow you carry, Jesus is with you. And we exist as a Christian church to help people know Jesus.

About Us
New IRA Opportunities
LACE has “partnered” with GOLDSTAR Trust Company to offer IRA investments.
The IRA funds are invested in LACE certificates to provide funds for church loan projects.
LACE began in 1960 when a group of pastors and laymen came up with a way for self-supporting churches to finance their building projects by use of member investments. LACE certificates were purchased by investors and the funds were then loaned to the church. Both investors and the church benefited. Investors earned a fair rate of interest on their certificate loans and the church received a lower interest rate on their loan than they may have received from a local bank.

While things have changed in the past 46 years, LACE still depends on member investments to assist in providing loans to WELS and ELS churches throughout the United States. Our mission remains the same: To provide capital funds at low interest rates to WELS and ELS congregations and affiliated organizations.

LACE is located in Saginaw, MI. Please contact our office with questions regarding a loan, or investing with LACE. We will be happy to speak with you and mail you our latest Offering Circular and any other information we have available.

While Luther was a professor at Wittenberg , he devised a seal which was meant to be expressive of his theology. In a letter to a friend Luther explained the symbolism of his seal. A black cross rests on a  red heart "to put me in mind that faith in Christ crucified saves us.

“The heart rests on the center of a white rose "to show that faith causes joy, consolation and peace. The rose is white, not red, because white is the ideal color of all angels and blessed spirits." The rose is fixed in a dark blue sky "to denote that such joy of faith in the spirit is but an earnest and beginning of heavenly joy to come, as anticipated and held by hope, though not yet revealed." The sky is surrounded by a golden ring "to signify that such bliss in heaven is endless, and more precious than all joys and treasures...

Christ, our dear Lord, He will give grace unto eternal life."

Mission Statement - "Encourage and Enlighten Through Experience"

To fearlessly Encourage people in their walk with Jesus as they seek, find and believe the hope a Christian has through Christ. To Enlighten those who want to go deeper in their faith or find out about the hope of a Christian. To share the hope we have in Jesus Christ through the Experience of God's word in music and in our lives.

Possessing the characteristic of a storyteller, weaved with the acoustic essence of this gifted musician, Mike Westendorf, singer/songwriter and weatherman extraordinaire, brings a refreshing quality to the stage. With lyrical portrayals that come alive through his songs, Mike Westendorf reveals a tale through music. "Mike's faith shines through his heartfelt lyrics and his sensitive, genuine delivery. Each song is arranged in a way that enhances the message..." says Cheryl Berdan of Spring Creek Church, Brookfield, WI. Audiences of every age and generation have been impacted and changed through his performances, each leaving with something they hadn't come with. An answer to something they were pondering, or the realization of a question they didn't even know they were asking. With the national release of his project, Color Through the Gray, along with great radio success in 2007 from the single “Climb the Mountain”, Mike Westendorf has melded his years of experience in the media with his gift of music. What has come forth is a unique portrayal of songs that have a storyline attached. Mike has performed in a myriad of venues and he has a heart for the church and sharing the story of God's Grace.
